The Santa Monica Pier is the heart and soul of family-friendly Los Angeles and the perfect place to begin any trip. The pier features Pacific Park, a small amusement park with a solar-powered Ferris wheel offering sweeping ocean views, roller coasters, and midway games. Below the pier, the wide sandy beach stretches for miles in either direction, perfect for sandcastle building and boogie boarding in the gentle waves. The nearby Santa Monica Promenade offers family dining and street performers, and renting bikes to ride the paved Marvin Braude Bike Trail that runs 22 miles along the coast gives families a memorable way to explore Venice Beach, with its famous boardwalk of artists, musicians, and Muscle Beach outdoor gym. For families who want a quieter beach experience, the El Matador State Beach in Malibu offers dramatic sea stacks and tide pools that fascinate children.

No family visit to Los Angeles is complete without immersing in its legendary entertainment scene. Universal Studios Hollywood combines a working movie studio with a full-fledged theme park, and the Studio Tour takes families through actual backlot sets where movies and shows are filmed, including encounters with King Kong and a shark from Jaws. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal brings the same magic as its Orlando counterpart in a more compact setting. The Griffith Observatory, perched on the slopes of Mount Hollywood, offers free admission and stunning views of the city and the Hollywood Sign, along with telescope viewing and an engaging planetarium show. For younger children, Kidspace Children's Museum in Pasadena offers outdoor climbing structures, a stream to wade in, and hands-on science exhibits that keep kids engaged for hours.

The museum and science scene in Los Angeles is exceptional for families. The California Science Center in Exposition Park is free and houses the Space Shuttle Endeavour, an actual NASA orbiter that kids can see up close in a way that makes space exploration tangible and thrilling. The Natural History Museum next door features a dinosaur hall, a live butterfly pavilion, and an outdoor nature garden where children can explore California ecosystems. The La Brea Tar Pits and Museum lets kids watch paleontologists actively excavating Ice Age fossils from the still-bubbling asphalt, connecting them to a prehistoric world that existed right beneath the modern city. The Getty Center, free to visit though parking is paid, sits atop a hill with sweeping views and features a family room with art-making activities alongside one of the finest art collections in the western United States.

Getting around Los Angeles with kids requires accepting that driving is part of the experience, but smart planning minimizes time in traffic. Cluster your activities by area rather than zigzagging across the city: spend one day at Santa Monica and Venice Beach, another at Universal Studios, a third exploring Griffith Park and the Hollywood area, and a fourth at the Exposition Park museums and La Brea Tar Pits. The Metro has expanded significantly and now connects Hollywood, downtown, and Santa Monica, offering a car-free option for some routes that kids find fun. Stay near the beach in Santa Monica for the best combination of walkability and family amenities, or near Universal City for quick theme park access. Los Angeles is a year-round destination, but May through October offers the warmest beach weather while the cooler months of November through April bring clearer skies and better air quality for outdoor sightseeing.
