Hampi, spread across the boulder-strewn banks of the Tungabhadra River in Karnataka, India, was once the magnificent capital of the Vijayanagara Empire — the last great Hindu kingdom to resist the tide of Sultanate expansion across the Deccan Plateau. At its zenith in the 15th and early 16th centuries, Vijayanagara was among the largest and wealthiest cities on earth, home to an estimated 500,000 people at a time when London held fewer than 100,000. Merchants from Portugal, Persia, and Arabia crowded its bazaars, marveling at streets lined with silk, rubies, and spice. The city's very name — Vijayanagara, meaning 'City of Victory' — captured the imperial confidence of a civilization that believed itself indestructible.

The empire rose in 1336 when two brothers, Harihara I and Bukka Raya, founded a new kingdom on the sacred site where the sage Vidyaranya had meditated along the Tungabhadra. Blessed by divine geography — the river's granite-studded terrain formed a natural fortress — and fueled by control of the lucrative South Indian spice and cotton trade, Vijayanagara expanded rapidly. Successive dynasties, most notably the Tuluva dynasty under the great king Krishnadevaraya (r. 1509–1529), transformed the capital into a city of unparalleled grandeur. Krishnadevaraya patronized poets and scholars, erected towering gopurams above temple complexes, and hosted an imperial court whose opulence dazzled every foreign visitor who left an account. The Portuguese traveler Domingo Paes wrote in 1520 that the city was 'as large as Rome and very beautiful to the sight.'

The fall came with catastrophic swiftness. In January 1565, a coalition of five Deccan Sultanates met the Vijayanagara army at the Battle of Talikota. The empire's forces were numerically superior, but treachery within the ranks and the Sultanates' superior artillery shattered the Hindu army. The king, Aliya Rama Raya, was captured and beheaded on the battlefield. What followed was one of the most thorough destructions of any premodern city: the Sultanate armies spent five months systematically looting and demolishing Hampi, burning palaces, toppling sculptures, and smashing the intricate irrigation works that had made the capital's gardens possible. Within a year, a metropolis that had thrived for over two centuries was reduced to rubble, its population scattered, its temples defaced, its streets silent. The jungle and the boulders slowly reclaimed what humans had abandoned.

Modern archaeology began to reveal Hampi's buried complexity only in the 19th century, when British surveyor Colin Mackenzie documented the ruins during his tenure with the East India Company. The Archaeological Survey of India has since mapped over 1,600 individual monuments across a 26-square-kilometer urban core, and excavations continue to rewrite the empire's history. Digs in the royal enclosure have uncovered audience halls with sophisticated hydraulic systems, treasury buildings lined with stone channels for counting coins, and elaborate stepped tanks fed by aqueducts that snaked for kilometers through the rocky terrain. A 2010 excavation near the Mahanavami Dibba — the massive ceremonial platform used for the empire's grandest festivals — unearthed bronze figurines, ivory gaming pieces, and Persian-glazed ceramics that confirm the city's role as a crossroads of global trade. Remote-sensing surveys have further revealed the outlines of neighborhoods, marketplaces, and suburban temples still buried beneath the soil.

The ruins visitors walk through today form one of the most otherworldly landscapes in all of Asia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. The Virupaksha Temple, dedicated to Shiva and still an active place of worship after more than a thousand years, anchors the sacred center with its soaring 50-meter tower. Nearby, the Vittala Temple complex contains the famous Stone Chariot — a wheeled stone shrine to Garuda so perfectly proportioned that it has become an icon of Indian architecture — and the Musical Pillars, columns that resonate with distinct musical notes when struck. The Royal Enclosure holds the Lotus Mahal, an elegant two-story pavilion that fuses Hindu and Islamic architectural styles in a way that speaks to the empire's cosmopolitan character. Elephant stables large enough to house a war elephant for each month of the year stand nearby, their domed chambers still intact. Across the river in the Anegundi area, cave paintings and megalithic burial sites hint at an even older sacred landscape that Vijayanagara's founders deliberately chose to inhabit.

Hampi rewards the patient traveler willing to move beyond the well-worn temple circuit. At dawn, when light turns the granite boulders amber and the river runs quiet, the scale of what was lost becomes viscerally real. A civilization that produced some of the subcontinent's finest music, literature, and bronze casting was erased in a matter of months, its memory preserved almost entirely in stone. Ongoing conservation efforts by the Archaeological Survey of India and international partners are working to stabilize structures threatened by monsoon erosion and touristic pressure, ensuring that future generations can stand before these ruins and reckon with the full complexity of an empire that was, for two centuries, one of the true wonders of the medieval world.
